About Kichonge

Baraka Kichonge's life journey is marked by an untiring commitment to the field of sustainable renewable energy science and engineering. His educational path began at Tanga Technical Secondary School in 1990, where he laid the foundation for his academic and professional growth with a Certificate of Secondary Education Examination. His early passion for engineering led him to the Technical College Arusha, where he earned a Full Technician Certificate (FTC) in Automotive Engineering, a pivotal stepping stone for his future endeavours. His dedication to mechanical engineering remained steadfast as he continued his education. At the Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology (DIT), he obtained an Advanced Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, delving deeper into the intricacies of the field. Subsequently, he pursued further knowledge at the College of Engineering and Technology (CoET) of the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), earning a Postgraduate Diploma in Mechanical Engineering and later a Master of Science in Production Engineering.

However, it was his pursuit of a Doctor of Philosophy in Sustainable Renewable Energy Engineering from the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST) that propelled him into the realm of expertise. This rigorous academic journey equipped him with the knowledge and insight necessary to make significant contributions to the world of renewable energy. Separate from academic achievements, Dr. Kichonge has taken on active roles in administrative capacities within Arusha Technical College (ATC), such as serving as the Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department and later at the position of College Registrar. He currently holds the position of Senior Lecturer and serves as the Ag. Director of Academic Support Services. In addition, he is also an adjunct faculty member at the School of Materials Energy Water and Environmental Sciences at NM-AIST. In his role as an adjunct faculty member, he persistently oversees several postgraduate students specializing in the field of renewable energy science and engineering. These positions reflect his academic, leadership and organizational skills that have been instrumental in shaping the educational scenery.

The heart of Dr. Kichonge's impact, however, lies in renewable energy research. His work spans a wide array of topics, from the design of solar-assisted heat pump dryers to the evaluation of the potential of non-edible oilseed plants for biofuels production. The findings from his research, published in reputable journals, have made substantial contributions to the advancement of clean and sustainable energy technologies. Moreover, Dr. Kichonge has taken a step further by securing patents for innovations in agricultural produce dryer technologies, highlighting not only his research capabilities but also his dedication to practical, real-world solutions in the field of renewable energy. As a Senior Lecturer, his passion for renewable energy and a deep well of knowledge continue to inspire and guide the next generation of engineers. His tireless dedication to the pursuit of sustainable energy and engineering has not only shaped a legacy but is also contributing to a more energy-efficient and eco-friendly future for Tanzania and beyond.
